Previously reported that Microsoft removed a number of options in File Explorer on Windows 11 Insider Dev Build 23481, where the removed options include:

  • Hide Folder Merge conflicts.
  • Always show icons, never thumbnails.
  • Display file icon on thumbnails.
  • Display file type information on Folder tips.
  • Hide protected OS files.
  • Show drive letters.
  • Show popup description for Folder and Desktop items.
  • Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color.
  • Use sharing wizard.

Now, to be honest, many users don’t like Microsoft’s move, because according to some users, the omitted options are quite useful, for myself I prefer to activate always show icons, never thumbnails in order to make loading folders noticeably faster.

Regarding this change, can we restore the old options in Folder Explorer again? The answer is of course yes (at least for now, yes). Curious how? The following WinPoin summarizes the short steps.

Step 1. First, please open Registry Editor.

Step 2. Then navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvancedFolder.

Step 3. Then in the sub directory below folder, please look for part of FolderSizeTip, then please you rename become FolderLegacySizeTip.

apart from FolderSizeTip please change some of the parts listed below to be:

  • FolderSizeTip => FolderLegacySizeTip
  • HideMergeConflicts => HideLegacyMergeConflicts
  • IconsOnly => IconsLegacyOnly
  • SharingWizardOn => SharingLegacyWizardOn
  • ShowDriveLetters => ShowLegacyDriveLetters
  • ShowInfoTip => ShowLegacyInfoTip
  • ShowTypeOverlay => ShowLegacyTypeOverlay
  • SuperHidden => SuperLegacyHidden
  • ShowCompColor => ShowLegacyCompColor

Step 4. When it’s finished, please reboot your system and now everything checkbox in Folder Options has returned as before.

Little information, quoted from WinAero, in Build 23481 Microsoft has applied a filter to the File Explorer options list. They are stored in the Registry below keys reviewed above, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorerAdvancedFolder.

If the option name matches one in the hardcoded block list, the Folder Options dialog won’t show it. So how does this filter work? Well, reportedly it checks if the option name in the Registry contains, let’s call it “FolderSizeTip”. So, if the user renames the key to FolderSizeTip2, the key will not appear, because it matches the criteria FolderSizeTip.

But if the user changes the option name (subkey name) to FolderLegacySizeTip, it won’t match the pattern FolderSizeTip. So it will reappear in the Folder Options dialog. This way, the user can rename the options subkey to something like Folder11Size22Tip, so that will work too.

Apart from the quite complicated method above, you can actually use a tool from WinAero called WinAero Tweaker where you can download this application on the page following.

Comment below guys, do you like the old option, or the new option?
