A recent report quoted from the page forbes where according to the findings of security experts, it turns out that all WhatsApp account users can be deactivated and deleted by anyone who sends and knows this bug, and unfortunately nothing can stop the process.
This bug itself is related to the method provided by WhatsApp if the user’s smartphone device is lost, where the user can contact WhatsApp and then request that the number be deleted, unfortunately this method does not provide further verification so that anyone can delete someone else’s account.
About this thing, Jake MooreGlobal Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET and former Police Cybercrime Team & Head of Digital Forensics Unit has shared a Tweet warning users how easy it is for bad actors or anyone with a user’s phone number to remotely deactivate accounts.
And as in the image you can see above, WhatsApp states that sending emails with phrase “Lost/Stolen:Please deactivate my account” in the email and then entering the phone number associated with the account into the email address provided will result in the account being deactivated instantly.
And what’s worse, guys, according to Moore, this deactivation request can be sent from any email address and not just the one associated with the account holder.
What Happens If We Become Victims?
When someone turns out to be backing up our account to be used as a trial, actually we don’t need to worry too much because the account is not completely deleted and even other users can still see our contacts, and can still send messages that will be held as delayed up to 30 days from the time this deactivation was performed.
And to restore the WhatsApp account, we can simply restart the WhatsApp application and log in again. That said, according to Moore and others on the Twitter Thread, it has the potential to be used in an attack denial of services to users by writing certain scripts so that the script can continue to send deactivation emails for 30 days, and of course this is quite a worrying thing.
