In a separate article to improve the Windows User Experience, Microsoft seems to be presenting an improvement to the policy of Pinning Apps in Windows 11.
Where with this improvement users can manage default applications and control Pinned Apps on the Taskbar more easily and transparently, considering that currently Default Apps are very difficult to change and even, sometimes applications that have just been installed automatically insert Pinned Apps without the user wanting.
"We want to ensure that people are in control of what gets pinned to their Desktop, their Start menu and their Taskbar as well as to be able to control their default applications such as their default browser through consistent, clear and trustworthy Windows provided system dialogs and settings." ungkap Microsoft.
Okay, the first thing that might be a highlight of this announcement is that Windows 11 will bring deep link URIs for apps that will allow apps to redirect users to the location of the associated app in the Settings app, where users can set default apps.
"For defaults, we will soon introduce a new Settings deep link URI for applications to take their users directly to the appropriate location in Settings for the user to change their defaults. This is an extension to our existing ms-settings: URI scheme. Learn more about ms-settings: URI schemes." ungkap Microsoft.
Furthermore, for Pinning Apps, later developers can get other publicly available APIs to manage Pin Apps either as Primary or secondary, where the increase is later the user can adjust whether the application will be Pinned or not on the Taskbar as shown below.
With this upgrade, according to Microsoft, they want to ensure that users are in control of what they want, including regarding default apps and pinned apps on their desktop.
Interesting isn’t it, and what’s even more interesting, these two features and capabilities will reportedly be tested soon for Insider Dev Channel users, so you can try this improvement right away.
In general, from this improvement, there are three things that are highlighted, guys, which include:
- We will ensure people who use Windows are in control of changes to their pins and their defaults.
- We will provide a common supported way for application developers to offer the ability to make their app the default or pin their app to the taskbar. This will provide users a consistent experience across all apps.
- Microsoft apps will use the same common supported methods for pinning and defaults.
