For now, Windows Insiders may only know three cycles and the insider channels that cover them Dev, Beth And release preview, but did you know that Microsoft has finally updated its Insider Program which goes hand in hand with change which was previously presented last year, which this year, Microsoft introduced Channel Canaries and also reboot Channel Dev.
As you can see in the image above, the new Canary Channel will be the earliest preview version which runs similarly to the previous Dev Channel, where this channel contains changes and the latest version which is certainly more vulnerable to unstable bugs compared to other channels.
Besides that, maybe on the Canary Channel there will be many new features that Microsoft might not present in Windows 11, and these features are only experimental features and initial trials whether these features are suitable for release on the next Channel and finally on the Stable Channel.
Whereas the new Dev Channel which has now been rebooted will run to develop long-term features, where the features that are present on the Dev Channel will most likely be present for the Stable Channel in the future, even so of course the stability and reliability of this Channel will still be low but better than Channel Canaries.
For Beta and Release Preview there are no changes and are still running as they are today.
Improvements from Last Year’s Changes
A little flashback, apart from introducing a new Icon and Logo for Windows Insider in 2022, Microsoft also changed the provisions of the Windows Insider Program, where previously the Dev Channel would get the fastest release compared to other Insider versions, but with a note that the Dev Channel should not be considered compatible with certain Windows version, because the features and capabilities in the Build (Insider Dev) will be subject to change over time, be it replaced, removed and maybe even the build(Insider Dev) will never be released to general users, in this version too, it will be possible there were other parallel lines that forked, until finally one was picked up and developed and transferred to the Insider Beta Channel.
But since this Dev Channel seems confusing, maybe Microsoft finally decided to create a new Canary Channel to separate Branches from Windows Releases, where the initial test versions will come to Canary and features that are ready to be tested in the long term now come to the Dev Channel for later distributed to other channels.
Build Number And Identity
Because the name has changed, of course some of the Builds that were originally on the Dev Channel have now changed to Canary, the build number and identity itself can be determined based on the following list.
- Canary Channels: 25000.
- Dev Channels: 23000.
- Beta Channels: 22000.
- Release Preview: Released versions of Windows 10 and Windows 11.
So for those of you who are using Build 25xxx (including 25309) you are currently on the Canary Channel, while for those of you who are currently using Build 23xxx, then you are on the Dev Channel, your 22xxx is on the Beta Channel and Release Preview is still on the same build. same with Channel Stable.
Insider consistency
I think maybe this was done so that the name of the Insider runs consistently between Edge and Windows, considering that the two are related to each other, besides that so that users are not too confused with the naming of the various Insider versions.
Now both have the same name, Canary, Dev and Beta, with the exception of the Release Preview which is here specifically for Windows Insiders and not for Edge Insiders.
With the consistency of this name, of course users can more easily understand the changes and update cycles that are presented.
What To Do If Users Want To Stay On The Dev Channel
Unfortunately we can’t switch directly from the Settings page, where if you are currently using Build 25xxx which is automatically on the Canary Channel, then you have to do a clean install to use the Dev Channel, considering the Build that is presented is far below and very different.
So that’s a little announcement for Windows Insiders today, so don’t be surprised if now on the Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program page you have got a new option (Canary Channel) there.
