Apart from trying Tiny11 and also Ghost Specter whose review I will publish in the next few days, I also tried an interesting OS which this time is based on Windows 10 1809.

Called Windows Experience | Freestyle Update, this OS is a Windows 10 OS with a classic look like Windows Xp which certainly makes me a little nostalgic for this 23 year old OS.

Then how is the experience of trying this OS? Is this OS suitable for everyday use? let’s discuss guys.

Hardware and Installation Process

For the installation of this OS, I didn’t install it on my main device this time, because my old laptop was still used to run Tiny11, so for this installation, I used VMware which I installed on Linux Ubuntu 22.10 with the hardware configuration as shown below.

As for the installation process, the installation of this OS is more or less the same as Windows 10 installation in general, starting from selecting the language, keyboard, license agreement, and selecting partitions, everything is exactly the same as the general Windows 10 installation process.

When the installation is complete, we will not be directed to the OOBE or Out of Box Experience process, where everything is set up, starting from local accounts with default name ‘Administrator’ without a password, and instead we will be directly directed to the desktop page as shown in the following image.

OK, because this OS runs on VMWare, of course I have to install VMware Tools to make it look even better.

After installed, and the system has been rebooted, here is the main view of Desktop Windows Experience | Freestyle Update aka Windows 10 with Windows Xp flavor.

Unique Modified Features

Okay, let’s start with the browser first, where by default this OS presents Internet Explorer, but this isn’t really Internet Explorer, guys, because even though the icon is IE and the browser looks very similar to Internet Explorer, this browser is actually Mozilla Firefox.

And this is a good thing, considering that Internet Explorer itself is finished and has been terminated by Microsoft.

Then in File Explorer, it looks very similar to Windows Explorer in the Windows XP era, where the sidebar appears in its own distinctive style, as well as the buttons.

But comrades, the sidebar looks like System Task, Other Place and Details it’s just a view, and we can’t access and click like we should.

So for quick access via the Sidebar, we must first click the icon Folders in the Toolbar section to bring up the Sidebar like in Windows 10 in general, even though it looks now like Windows Xp with its typical old school icon.

In general, almost everything is made very similar to Windows XP guys, where even in the system settings, the OS version displayed is not Windows 10, but Windows XP Professional (including if we check Winver).

Meanwhile, for self-activation, this OS does not preactivated in other words we have to keep using the Windows 10 Pro license we have to activate this OS, and if we click the button activate windows Click on the System Settings page which is accessed via the Control Panel, we will be directed to the Windows 10 Modern Settings page as shown in the following image.

Very Nostalgic View

For the appearance of this OS itself, in my opinion it is very nostalgic, because the appearance is really made as similar as possible to Windows XP, starting from the wallpaper bliss, classic Start Menu display, and also a thin font. Although indeed some parts of Windows 10 cannot be removed, for example the new Settings page that you can see in the previous image.

In fact, the legendary Calculator, Paint and 3D Paint Ball applications are here, and Windows XP looks really good.

A classic calculator application that makes you nostalgic
Paint

Don’t forget, there are several old school games that also accompany this OS, including Minesweeper, Solitaire and friends.

TaskManager

Now what’s interesting is that the task manager also appears in the old Windows XP style, where it looks very classic by only showing tabs Applications, Processes, Performance, And networking.

DPIs and Fonts Less Comfortable

But if you try this OS on a more modern screen, the font and DPI of this OS don’t feel quite comfortable, because everything looks very thin and small, guys, like the following example, when I tried to read several articles on WinPoin.

The font size is not very comfortable at 1080p resolution, and even though it was changed to 1366 x 768 pixels, because we are used to the Windows generation with thicker and more eye-pleasing fonts, it feels uncomfortable to read and browse on this OS in my opinion.

But this can usually be solved if we use another browser such as Google Chrome, even though the Windows Border section will actually look messy.

Windows Border Windows 10 and Windows XP like mixed up

performance

I admit, this OS is fast enough for us to use, this is probably because the graphics that are presented are quite old school without burdening the VGA, even when opening several tabs in Google Chrome, the use of RAM itself is quite standard at 2-3 GB, including system usage.

In terms of performance, when compared to regular Windows 10, this OS has better performance, even if it runs on a Virtual Machine though.

Usage Experience

Even though I don’t use this OS for daily needs, as long as I try this OS for the purposes of writing articles, including some of yesterday’s articles, I think this OS is quite okay for us to use.

Apart from that, because this OS is Windows 10, application support is certainly better than Windows XP which has been turned off for a long time, for example games, browsers, and other applications, this OS can still download and run everything properly without any problems.

As for the Update problem itself, we cannot download and get updates from Microsoft via Windows Update, considering that it seems that the ability to update has been limited by Modder of this OS.

So with that, there is no guarantee that this OS will be safe for us to use every day.

Conclusion

OS Windows Experience | This Freestyle Update is indeed interesting, where we can feel a number of Windows XP experiences in Windows 10 even though it’s not perfect, but a number of parts are enough to vent a sense of nostalgia, such as the presence of an old school appearance, bliss default wallpaper, a number of old applications such as Calculator and friends , even the presence of 3D Paintball is in this OS.

Then is this OS suitable for daily use? If it is only used for Offline and Trial purposes I think it’s okay to use it, but if it is intended for daily needs such as work, I think this OS is not suitable, considering that this OS is a modified OS which there is no guarantee of security from Microsoft itself.

In addition, Windows Update support that is not available is also one of the things that makes this OS vulnerable to Vulnerability.

So that’s all for a brief review of Windows Experience | Freestyle Update is Windows 10 with Windows Xp flavor, if you want to try it, you can download this OS from the page following.

And remember, this OS has lots of bugs because lots of parts have been changed, for changelogs and other information about this OS, you can see the information in the download link listed above.

Comment below, guys, are you interested in trying this OS? I’m still trying Ghost Specter, so please wait for WinPoin, guys.
