Microsoft Will Bring Ads to Bing Chat

In the past few weeks, there have been rumors that Microsoft seems to be presenting advertisements on their Chatbot AI service, and after a long time the news has been a rumor, now Microsoft has finally revealed their plans which are really going to present advertisements on Bing Chat.

In Microsoft’s official page followingthey state that their goal with Bing Chat is to “drive more traffic to publishers in this new search engine world”, which according to Yusuf Mehdi, Corporate Vice President & Consumer Chief Marketing Officer, they will implement a unique way to drive traffic to publishers.

"The early progress is encouraging. Based on our data from the preview, we are driving more traffic from all types of users. We have brought more people to Bing/Edge for new scenarios like chat and we are seeing increased usage. Then, we have uniquely implemented ways to drive traffic to publishers including citations within the body of the chat answers that are linked to sources as well as citations below the chat results to “learn more” with links to additional sources."

So on that page, Microsoft also stated that they had met with several businesses that were partners in the service newsfeed Microsoft Start, where the partner delivers feedback to Microsoft regarding how they can use Bing Chat to link to content on their service. There are some initial ideas that Microsoft added to this, which include:

• The extended hover cursor experience on hovering over a link from a publisher will show more links from that publisher giving users more ways to engage and drive more traffic to the publisher’s website.
• For our Microsoft Start partners, placing rich text of Microsoft Start licensed content next to chat answers helps drive more user engagement with content on Microsoft Start where we share advertising revenue with partners. We’re also exploring ad placement within the chat experience to share ad revenue with partners whose content contributes to chat response.

But of course because Microsoft still thinks that this advertising plan as initial idea, it’s likely that the ad format and experience will change in the coming months for Bing Chat, but of course for Bing Chat users who were hoping that the service would not come with ads, this is bad news.
