A new problem has now been revealed in the snipping tool on Windows 10 and 11, where based on information disclosed by reverse engineering researcher David Buchanan on his Twitter account, it turns out that images that have been deleted in the Snipping tool are still saved.
In his test, Buchanan took screenshots with the Snipping Tool that comes standard with Windows 11, then he saved the screenshots for later he cut / cropped the image and saved it again (replaced), and a surprising thing was revealed, where the data was “trimmed” it hasn’t been deleted.
Arguably, having this flaw means one can restore data from cropped portions of an image in the same way. Buchanan stated, “The same exploit script works with a few changes (the pixel format is RGBA not RGB).He added in a later tweet that the same issue was found with Snip and Sketch present in Windows 10, but apparently this flaw is not present with Windows 10’s built-in Snipping tool.
So, of course, this flaw can be exploited by irresponsible people, although so far there has been no confirmation from Microsoft regarding the details discovered by David Buchanan.
