Recently, Acer was one of the companies hardware early Taiwan confirmed that they had experienced a data leak after malicious threat infiltrated one of the document servers being used by its repair technicians.

According to an Acer spokesperson told The Register, they are currently conducting an investigation, and according to them, there is no indication that consumer data is stored on the server.

This announcement comes after a Hacker who goes by the name “Kernelware” started selling 160 GB of data stolen from Acer, including 655 Directories and 2,869 files, according to the Hacker, the stolen data included:

  • Confidential slides and presentations
  • Staff technical manuals
  • Windows Imaging Format files
  • Binaries
  • Backend infrastructure data
  • Confidential product documents
  • Replacement Digital Product Keys
  • ISO files
  • Windows System Deployment Image files
  • BIOS components
  • ROM files

And as proof that the data is real, Kernelware shares screenshots technical schematic for the Acer V206HQL display, along with documents, BIOS definitions and other confidential documents.

These hackers also said that they would only sell the data through intermediaries and accept Monero cryptocurrencies to ensure that transactions will not be easily traced.

So until now, luckily there is no news that user data has been stolen, however this is a big loss for Acer because important confidential data might be used by its business rivals.
