Recently it was quite hot in the media where the US Federal Trade Commission or commonly known as the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has fined Microsoft $ 20 million USD for violating the US Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
In the press release, The FTC says that Microsoft illegally collects personal information from children on Xbox console devices without the consent of their parents, and that the FTC also accuses Microsoft of retaining data it collects from children during the Xbox account creation process, even when parents do not complete the process. And interestingly, according to the FTC, Microsoft sometimes retained this data “for years” between 2015 and 2020.
In addition to a $20 million USD fine, the FTc will also require Microsoft to implement new systems to improve the privacy of children using Xbox, as follows:
"For example, the order will extend COPPA protections to third-party gaming publishers with whom Microsoft shares children’s data. In addition, the order makes clear that avatars generated from a child’s image, and biometric and health information, are covered by the COPPA Rule when collected with other personal data"
So how does Microsoft respond to this?, in a press release posted on Xbox Wire , Microsoft acknowledges that there was a “technical error” that resulted in Microsoft systems not deleting the account creation data for child accounts when the process was not fully completed after 14 days. Microsoft said it fixed the error and deleted data that was “never used, shared, or monetized.”
In addition, Microsoft also said it has updated its account creation process to better identify potential child accounts and make parents and caregivers aware of what they need to do to protect their children’s data. Microsoft will also require children under the age of 13 who created an account before May 2021 to re-verify their account with their parents in the coming months.
"We are working hard to ensure that when parents are prompted to reconsent, they will have the information needed to proceed without disruptions to their child’s access," ungkap Microsoft
