While other browsers already provide AVIF support by default, such as Firefox, which released it support in Firefox 93Microsoft Edge unfortunately still doesn’t get the same support.
But even so, recently there is a good news because Microsoft has finally started adding support for the AVIF format to Edge, where the AVIF or AV1 format is a image encoding which is based on the AV1 Video Codec which reportedly has advantages in terms of efficiency.
This support according to a report by Leopeva64 on Twitter is present in Microsoft Edge Canary where Leopeva64 himself posted a screenshot of an AVIF demo test image running on the website libre-software.net/image/avif-test/.
However when running the same test image on the stable release of Edge version 112.0.1722.48, the image will be in the fallback JPEG format.
Also, AVIF support itself is currently not available by default in Edge Canary. Users who want to try enabling these features must use the command line flag “–enable-features=msEdgeAVIF” in the section Target like in the following picture.
Although this support seems to be coming soon, this feature is not finalized and is still in the development process, therefore it is possible that even if users enable this feature, the support may still not work as it should.
